iPhone 4 sells 600,000 in first day. Apple appologizes

In the first day of pre-orders Apple reports selling 600,000 of the new iPhone 4.  There were lots of ordering problems because AT&T’s system couldn’t handle the load causing frustration for many iPhone fans.  The white iPhone 4 was also mysteriously unavailable for pre-order.  Neither Apple nor AT&T has been willing to comment on the missing white iPhone 4 but most speculation on the internet suggests a supply issue and that it may not be available until much later in the summer.  Apple has already updated the estimated ship date for new orders twice today, they are now estimated to ship July 14th.  AT&T has quit taking iPhone 4 orders completely after the total disaster that happened with their system yesterday.

Official statement from Apple:

Yesterday Apple and its carrier partners took pre-orders for more than 600,000 of Apple’s new iPhone 4. It was the largest number of pre-orders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was far higher than we anticipated, resulting in many order and approval system malfunctions. Many customers were turned away or abandoned the process in frustration. We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties, and hope that they will try again or visit an Apple or carrier store once the iPhone 4 is in stock.
